Can I register my car in Abu Dhabi if my visa is from another Emirate?

Yes, you can. Abu Dhabi operates as a federal authority, so all UAE residents are allowed to register their vehicles there, even if their visa is from another emirate.

I want to register my vehicle in Dubai, but I live in Abu Dhabi. Can I do that?

Yes, you can, but certain conditions apply.
  1. You must prove your residence in Dubai.
  2. If you live in Dubai, provide a tenancy contract or Ejari.
If you work in a company based in Abu Dhabi that also has a Dubai office, you need a letterhead from the company written in arabic (signed and stamped) confirming that:
  1. You are their employee
  2. You hold an Abu Dhabi visa
  3. You work in their Dubai branch
  4. You are based in Dubai
Only then can you register a Dubai-based vehicle.

I’ve imported an American specs vehicle to Dubai. What’s the process to register it?

We’ve detailed the full process in our blog post: “How to Register an Imported Vehicle in Dubai”. Here’s a summary:
  1. Once you receive your car in Dubai you'll get VCC and if the VCC says your vehicle is non-GCC specs, test the car.
  2. Obtain a GCC Conformity Certificate (available at most RTA centers).
Once the vehicle passes the test:
  1. Get insurance
  2. Register at the RTA and collect the new number plates

I’ve imported an autonomous vehicle from China that runs on autopilot. Can I register it in Dubai?

What’s the process to register a vehicle that doesn’t have an engine?

Engineless vehicles include boat carriers or caravans that attach to another vehicle. In Dubai:
  1. Test the vehicle
  2. If it passes, get insurance for 36 months (since these vehicles are registered for 3 years)
  3. Proceed to registration counter
Note: Not all insurers offer 3-year insurance, so you’ll need to check with different providers. In Abu Dhabi, insurance is not required, but the rest of the process is the same.

I’m outside the UAE with my vehicle. Can I still renew my vehicle registration?

Yes, if your car is registered in Dubai, we provide this service. Contact our support for detailed assistance.

Am I allowed to drive my vehicle after the registration expires?

Yes, but only for 30 days after expiry, provided your insurance is still valid. Most insurance policies offer an extra 1-month validity after registration expires. After 30 days, you are not allowed to drive the vehicle until it’s renewed.
